Woorabinda School Camp Inc was originally set up as a cooperative formed by local schools for the use of local and surrounding schools. Its charter was and still is to provide an exciting, safe and educational experience for children at a price that most families could afford.
In its initial stages the education dept funded the camp supervisor and also supplied another teacher to help who was on part time study leave as well as a secretary/treasurer who was seconded on a part time basis from his deputy principals position at Albert St School in Moe.
The original Board made up of parents and teachers and interested members of the community worked hard to first of all find a suitable location, secure buildings from the old Yallourn hospital and physically begin the erection of the buildings and its services to the site.
The original idea of setting up a school camp was given a trial earlier at the old Neerum South Hospital and as the concept proved viable plans went full steam ahead at the "Woorabinda Site".
Programs in the early days were more creative than today with teachers taking part in bush art, film making, photography and drama .As the facilities around the camp have become more sophisticated so to the programs have become more regimented as all schools endeavor to squeeze as many of the activities as possible into their time available
Today Woorabinda boasts activities such as canoeing. raft building, archery, photo, koorie and environmental trails, adventure hikes, zip wire, flying foxes, ropes course, orienteering, map reading, rogaining and initiative games.
Schools provide their own teaching staff and parental help while Woorabinda provides one full time teacher supervisor who helps organize and run the program providing the necessary instructions for all activities to those visiting teachers and parents who in turn take the activity groups.
All activities at camp except for canoeing and cookouts are geared so that with minimal instruction visiting staff feel quite at home supervising groups.
